Milestones of the project
It may surprise you that the first electric tramway was put into operation here in 1891. However, soon after it was sold for re-organizational reasons, by its inventor František Križík, to the city of Prague.
The area with a military invalid-dorm and the first Prague gasworks has just achieved a truly elegant character. Upmarket companies are now moving to the renovated industrial area. Shabby shops are replaced by bistros and luxury cafes. Apart from the theatre you can also find here a concert hall with the best acoustics in Prague. Owing to the new architectonic projects the formerly neglected periphery behind the Negrelli viaduct has changed from an industrial area to a showroom of the contemporary urban design. At last Karlín is worthy of its name which was given to the place in 1817 when it was founded in tribute to the Emperor Franz I’s wife, Caroline Augusta. You may be surprised upon hearing that it was exactly this place when the first electric tramway was put into operation in 1891; it was, however, very soon sold to the city of Prague due to organizational reasons by its inventor František Křižík. The area where Invalidovna (a dormitory for war invalids) and the first gasworks of Prague are situated is finally obtaining a truly elegant character. The leading Czech as well as foreign companies are moving into reconstructed factory premises, dingy shops are being replaced by snack bars and posh cafés; apart from the theatre you can find here also a concert hall boasting of the best acoustics in Prague.
Arising from the water
The modern image of the district is influenced by the Vltava River to a certain extent. In the spring in 2002 the river flooded the streets of Karlín and forever changed the appearance of the place. It will never happen again because Prague invested a lot in the installation of flood control measures. The reliable protection attracted investors once again, who started to shape a new, modern look of Karlín in cooperation with reputable foreign architects.
Western flair of the district
When on Rohanské nábřeží you feel as though you were in a different, western world. The Danube House, Nile House, Amazon Court, River Diamond…These are the name of new office blocks situated in the fast developing district of Prague on the Vltava river bank. In Karlín, history and modern architecture have been successfully merged; the original industrial genius loci is now featuring the western flair and spirit. Not only people who commute to work but also the more and more numerous inhabitants enjoy the place. You can find here dozens of restaurants, cafés, trendy shops, a lot of greenery, vicinity of the river and a ferry connecting Karlín with the Holešovice district, water reservoirs and fountains in the parks, artistic sculptures, etc. You can admire all this while riding a bike which you can rent here.
From Karlín to Europe
Apart from its distinctive look, the attractiveness of Karlín for residents also lies in its good transport service and accessibility because there are plenty of tramways and bus lines and the tube stations of the B and C lines. Buses from the Florenc bus station will take you not only to anywhere in the country but also to many European destinations.
